When Pete Nordstrom — scion of the department store family, musician, philanthropist, and all around good dude — decides to throw a benefit concert for my favorite arts organization, I want to be involved. So, I was honored to design a limited edition print to sell at the event — dubbed the first annual Vera Rent Party1 — with all proceeds going to support Vera's events and programs.
1. Originating in Harlem during the 1920s, the rent party is a social occasion where tenants hire a band to play and pass the hat to raise money to pay their rent, which played a major role in the development of jazz and blues music.
I played around with a lot of ideas for the poster, but kept coming back to the image of the punk rock piggy bank for the way that it playfully captures the spirit of the party. The final poster is a five-color hand-pulled silkscreen print, which is by far the most colors I've ever personally screen printed before.
